Twenty Years of A Letter in the Scroll

On 10 November 2024, hundreds attended an evening of comedy and conversation in the city of Los Angeles entitled ‘Be the Letter in the Scroll’, in celebration of the 20th anniversary edition of A Letter in the Scroll. Hosted by award-winning comedian Alex Edelman, the evening featured a line-up of esteemed speakers including Rabbi Pini DunnerAriel BurgerDr Miriam Heller SternJonathan PrincePeter Samuelson and Leslie Schapira.

This event was part of hundreds of community events and gatherings in honour of the 4th yahrzeit of Rabbi Sacks zt"l. The final speech of the night was delivered by special guest Gila Sacks, who remarked, “We find ourselves in the city of stories, in the presence of some of the most eminent storytellers around, who know better than anyone the power of a story to shape how we think, what we believe, of what we dream. And this evening we are celebrating a book which is, above all, simply a story – the story of what it is to be a Jew.”

In September of this year, we also presented an evening in New York to mark the launch of this special edition of the book. A Letter in the Scroll, the New York event was a panel discussion was held at the Moise Safra Center in New York with a panel of special guests - Natan Sharansky, Michal Cotler-Wunsh, Dan Senor, and Rabbi David Ingber - who discussed the key themes of the book. Natan Sharanksy was then announced to be the new Chair of the Global Advisory Board of The Rabbi Sacks Legacy.

The Rabbi Sacks Global Day of Learning, honouring the 4th yahrzeit of Rabbi Sacks, is officially marked tomorrow, 21st November, and all this month we have seen schools, shuls, book groups, families and communities around the world gather together online and in person to learn in his memory, and from his wisdom. More than 21,000 participants are involved in global learning events, including more than 50 schools. With over 170 events taking place in the UK, America, Israel, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Germany, Australia, Italy, Hungary, and even Nigeria and Cameroon, the world continues to remember Rabbi Sacks, his enduring legacy, and his noble letter in our scroll.
