A Selection of Resources for the Global Day of Learning
With learning resources from the first four Global Day of Learning yahrzeit community events (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024), we invite educators and learning groups to select the theme which most speaks to them, and engage in the life-affirming teachings of Rabbi Sacks.
UNIT 1
Community
What strengthens and supports a community? With excerpts, quotes, and discussion questions, this unit examines Rabbi Sacks' belief in the fundamental importance of community.
UNIT 2
Family
From our biblical forefathers, to marriage, parents, grandparents and siblings, we will learn of the impact of family throughout Jewish history as well as encourage discussions on family values today.
UNIT 3
Israel
Explore Israel as a biblical promise from God , as the land of hope, and through its full significance today, from the perspective of Rabbi Sacks, with videos, discussion points and even ancient prophecies included.
UNIT 4
Jewish Identity
"A Letter in the Scroll..." This unit explores the notion of Jewish identity, both individually and nationally, using texts from Rabbi Sacks to develop an understanding of this important theme.
UNIT 5
Religion and Science
"Scientific knowledge doesn't contradict religious belief..." This unit focuses on explaining the coexistence of these two truths, despite their apparent contradictions.
UNIT 6
From Optimism to Hope
"Optimism is all very well, but it takes courage to hope..." This unit explores the Jewish idea of hope, with insights based on Biblical sources and the modern experience.
UNIT 7
The Home We Build Together
"A nation is built by building..." This unit focuses on importance of uniting our diverse by fragmented society, as a community, a nation and a planet.
UNIT 8
The People of the Book
This year’s new theme, The People of the Book, reflects a concept that Rabbi Sacks cherished – a commitment to learning, dialogue and the power of ideas.
