Unit 3
Overview
In this third unit, we will explore the path to God through Torah study. We will look at some of the classic approaches to the mitzvah of Torah study using texts that Rabbi Sacks has selected, and develop an understanding of these themes through his writings.
Educational Aims
The educational aims for this unit are for students to:
- consider the value and essence of the mitzvah of Limmud Torah
- consider the role of Torah study in achieving Jewish continuity
- consider the source and meaning behind the following descriptions of the Jewish people:
- People of the Book
- A nation of philosophers
- A nation of students and teachers
- explore in depth Rabbi Sacks’ approach to secular study and the place of “Torah and chokhma” in his thought.
